INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Bows Out After Two Terms, Hands Over to National Commissioner, After a decade of steering the affairs of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has officially concluded his second tenure as the Chairman of the electoral body.In a brief ceremony held at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, Prof. Yakubu handed over the leadership mantle to National Commissioner, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will serve as the Acting Chairman pending the appointment of a substantive Chairman by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.The handing-over event took place during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), where Prof. Yakubu expressed gratitude to staff, stakeholders, and Nigerians for their support throughout his tenure. He highlighted the reforms and innovations introduced under his leadership, including the deployment of technology to enhance the transparency and credibility of elections.Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu, in her brief remarks, commended Prof. Yakubu for his dedication and service to the nation, pledging to sustain the Commission’s reforms and ensure continuity as the Commission awaits the appointment of a new Chairman.Prof. Yakubu, who first assumed office in 2015 and was reappointed in 2020, remains the first INEC Chairman to serve two full terms since the establishment of the Commission.
