End To Oriire’s Electoral Apathy As Council Legislature Backs Oriire Youth Council’s PVC Drive

In a spirited plenary held earlier today at the Legislative Building of the Oriire Local Government Council Secretariat, members of the Oriire Legislative Arm unanimously lauded the bold initiative of the Oriire Youth Council to launch a local government-wide electoral sensitization and PVC registration drive.

The session, which featured a formal presentation from a delegation of the Youth Council, was met with resounding commendation and optimism from the Honourable Councillors, each of whom took turns to express support for what they described as “a purposeful and long-overdue intervention.”

Speaking during the session, Rt. Hon. Adebayo Opeyemi, the Leader of the House, welcomed the youth delegation warmly and commended their resolve to take responsibility for deepening civic awareness and democratic participation at the grassroots.

“This is not just an ordinary presentation; it is a roadmap to reclaiming political consciousness and power at the community level,” he said.

“We are not only impressed, we are ready to partner with you. I hereby request that you submit a budget proposal of the financial requirements for the campaign. This House will work hand in hand with the Executive Chairman of Oriire Local Government to see to it that the exercise is not just executed, but that it achieves tangible results.”

The lawmakers echoed similar sentiments throughout the plenary. From expressions of admiration for the youth’s coordination and discipline, to calls for the legislative and executive arms of the local government to institutionalize support for such grassroots-driven initiatives, the message was consistent—Oriire must not be left behind.

Each Honourable Councillor emphasized that the time has come to take voter education seriously in the local government, given the implications of underrepresentation and voter apathy in national statistics and constituency-based allocations.

The Youth Council team, led by National Chairman Comrade Sarafadeen Owonikoko Isiaq, was accompanied by key national and local officers including the Assistant National Secretary, PROs, and ward representatives.

The delegation reiterated their readiness to remain focused on the task ahead and promised to deliver a robust proposal to the House in the coming days.

According to Ajadi Isaac, the Council’s PRO I “This engagement marks a pivotal moment in our effort to reposition Oriire as a fully conscious, participatory local government. The encouragement from the House today is more than symbolic—it is strategic. It affirms that leadership at all levels recognizes the urgency of our message.”

The engagement with the Legislative Council follows prior strategic consultations with the Executive Chairman of Oriire LG, Hon. Michael Alabi Olateju, as well as with Hon. Johnson Ogundele Akin, the Member representing Oriire State Constituency at the Oyo State House of Assembly. Earlier in July, the Youth Council also visited the Majority Leader of the Oyo State House of Assembly in Ogbomoso, where similar expressions of support were recorded.

Next on the Council’s consultation calendar is the July 30th meeting with INEC and NOA, both of whom have been officially contacted for collaboration and resource alignment. Responses are also being awaited from Hon. Olamijuwonlo Alao-Akala, Federal House Member representing Ogbomoso North, Ogbomoso South, and Oriire; and from Hon. Ebenezer Ogunwuyi Segun, Chief of Staff to the Governor of Oyo State.

As the pieces continue to fall in place, the Oriire Youth Council remains confident that this historic grassroots initiative will catalyze new energy across wards, and position Oriire Local Government as a leader in democratic inclusion ahead of future elections.
