Democracy Day: Hon. Tolani Adigun Hails Nigeria’s Democratic Journey, Calls for Greater Citizen Participation

The Ibadan South-West Constituency I House of Assembly candidate, Hon. Tolani Adigun, has congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, describing June 12 as a defining symbol of the nation’s democratic resilience, sacrifice, and collective determination to uphold the will of the people.
In a statement commemorating the national celebration, Tolani noted that Nigeria’s democratic experience since the restoration of civilian rule in 1999 has witnessed remarkable progress despite prevailing challenges.
According to her, the country’s democratic institutions have become stronger over the years through successive transfers of power, increased political participation, judicial independence, expansion of civic space, and growing public engagement in governance.
“June 12 remains a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by patriotic Nigerians who fought for the democracy we enjoy today. It represents the triumph of the people’s will over oppression and the enduring strength of democratic ideals,” she stated.
The assembly candidate acknowledged that while Nigeria continues to grapple with economic difficulties, insecurity, unemployment, and governance concerns, democracy remains the most viable platform for addressing national challenges through dialogue, accountability, and inclusive leadership.
Tolani further noted that one of the greatest achievements of Nigeria’s democratic journey has been the growing involvement of young people and women in governance, public policy discussions, and electoral processes.
She emphasized that sustainable national development can only be achieved when citizens actively participate in democratic processes beyond election periods, urging Nigerians to remain committed to nation-building, peaceful coexistence, and responsible civic engagement.
“As we celebrate Democracy Day, we must not only reflect on how far we have come but also renew our commitment to building a more prosperous, secure, and inclusive Nigeria. Democracy is not merely about elections; it is about ensuring that government remains accountable to the people and responsive to their aspirations,” Hon. Tolani said.
She also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for sustaining democratic governance and implementing reforms aimed at strengthening the economy and deepening institutional development.
Hon. Tolani called on Nigerians, particularly the youth, to continue believing in the nation’s democratic project and to contribute meaningfully towards building a stronger and more united country.
She concluded by expressing optimism that Nigeria’s democracy would continue to evolve and mature, delivering greater opportunities, justice, and prosperity for all citizens.
