Ogbomoso, Oyo State

The Soun of Ogbomosoland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, Orumogege III, has ordered the immediate cancellation of the 2026 Egungun Festival across Ogbomosoland following security concerns arising from attacks allegedly perpetrated by hoodlums during the celebration.

The festival, which commenced on July 8, 2026, was originally scheduled to conclude on July 19, 2026.

In a statement issued by the Palace Secretary, Mr. Toyin Ajamu, on behalf of the monarch, the decision was taken after a series of incidents that reportedly threatened public peace and safety.

According to the statement, the cancellation became necessary to prevent a breakdown of law and order and to avert any unforeseen circumstances that could endanger residents and visitors within Ogbomosoland.

The palace directed all law enforcement agencies to ensure strict compliance with the directive and maintain peace across the affected communities.

It further warned that any individual or group found continuing with the celebration or engaging in activities capable of disrupting public order would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

The statement emphasized the need for residents to cooperate with security agencies and respect the directive issued by the traditional institution in the interest of public safety.

The Egungun Festival is one of the prominent traditional cultural celebrations in Ogbomosoland, attracting participants and spectators from within and outside the region. However, authorities say the suspension became necessary to safeguard lives and property following recent security concerns.

Security agencies have since been urged to intensify surveillance and enforcement efforts to ensure full compliance with the cancellation order and preserve peace throughout the area.
