Exclusive : Monarch Detained Over Oriire School Abduction Probe

A traditional ruler in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, Oba Tajudeen Abioye, the Eleshi Ele of Esiele, has reportedly been taken into custody by security operatives as part of ongoing investigations into the recent abduction of pupils, students, and teachers within the area.

Sources familiar with the investigation disclosed that the monarch’s detention is linked to allegations connecting him with certain individuals believed to have had involvement in the kidnapping incident that affected communities around Ahoro-Esiele, Yawota, and other neighbouring settlements.

The development follows the widely condemned attack in which armed abductors invaded schools in Oriire Local Government and whisked away several pupils, students, and education workers, triggering public outrage and heightened security concerns across Oyo State.

According to sources, investigators are exploring multiple aspects of the case, including allegations of local collaboration, intelligence compromise, and logistical assistance that may have facilitated the operation of the kidnappers before and after the attack. The reported detention of the monarch is said to form part of broader efforts to identify all individuals connected to the incident and establish the full circumstances surrounding the crime.

It was further gathered that security agencies are reviewing communication records, movement patterns, and possible links between suspects already in custody and other persons considered relevant to the investigation.

The reported arrest has generated varied reactions among residents of Oriire Local Government, many of whom remain deeply affected by the traumatic incident. While some residents expressed shock over the allegations, others noted that the monarch had publicly condemned the abduction and previously called for concerted efforts to secure the release of the victims.

Community leaders and stakeholders have appealed for a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation, stressing the importance of due process and urging members of the public to refrain from premature conclusions until the facts are fully established.

The school abduction remains one of the most significant security challenges recorded in Oyo State this year. The incident attracted widespread condemnation from parents, educational stakeholders, civil society organisations, and political leaders, while reigniting concerns about the safety of schools and rural communities.

Sources indicated that several persons suspected to be connected to the abduction have already been apprehended, with security agencies continuing efforts to track down and arrest other individuals believed to have played roles in the operation.

As of the time of this report, authorities have not issued an official statement confirming the specific allegations against Oba Tajudeen Abioye. Efforts to obtain reactions from the palace and associates of the monarch were unsuccessful.
