Political Tsunami Hits PDP in Ogbomoso As 2023 Reps Candidate, Onireti Leaves Party
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogbomoso North Local Government Area of Oyo State has been thrown into fresh turmoil following the resignation of its 2023 House of Representatives candidate, Olufemi Onireti.
In a letter dated April 2, 2026, and addressed to the Chairman of the PDP, Osupa Ward 9, Ogbomoso North LG, Onireti formally announced his resignation from the party with immediate effect.
“I, Olufemi Onireti, hereby formally resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), effective immediately,” the letter read.
Describing the decision as difficult, Onireti noted that he had been actively involved in the party, including contesting for the House of Representatives seat in the last general election. He, however, stated that after “a period of deep personal reflection,” he was convinced that stepping away from the party was the right course of action.
He expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunity to serve and for the platform it provided him for political participation and growth, while wishing the PDP well in its future endeavours.
Onireti’s exit is already generating ripples across the political landscape in Ogbomoso and beyond, with party faithful expressing mixed reactions over the development.
Though the resignation letter did not state specific reasons for his departure, sources within the party allege that his decision may not be unconnected to an internal crisis said to have existed between him and his political leader, Segun Ogunwuyi, who currently serves as Chief of Staff to the Governor of Oyo State.
Political observers say the alleged rift, believed to have festered since after the 2023 elections, may have deepened divisions within the party structure in Ogbomoso North, ultimately culminating in Onireti’s resignation.
As of press time, neither Onireti nor Ogunwuyi had publicly commented on the alleged crisis.
The development is widely seen as a significant blow to the PDP’s structure in Ogbomoso North, particularly as political realignments begin to take shape ahead of the 2027 general elections. Analysts suggest that Onireti’s next political move could further reshape the balance of power within the constituency.
Party stakeholders are expected to meet in the coming days to assess the impact of his departure and chart a way forward for the PDP in the area.
