BREAKING: APC Adopts Direct Primaries for All Elective Positions Nationwide

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially adopted direct primaries for the emergence of candidates across all elective positions ahead of the 2027 general elections, including the presidential ticket.
The decision was announced on Thursday, May 7, 2026, during the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja.
Speaking after the meeting, the APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, said the party resolved to adopt direct primaries nationwide as part of efforts to strengthen internal democracy, ensure transparency, and allow party members greater participation in the selection of candidates.
According to him, all aspirants seeking elective offices under the platform of the APC would emerge through direct voting by registered party members across the federation.
The development marks a significant shift in the ruling party’s approach to primaries, effectively ruling out indirect primaries and limiting consensus arrangements ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Party stakeholders at the NEC meeting reportedly expressed confidence that the adoption of direct primaries would deepen internal democracy and enhance credibility within the party ahead of the crucial elections.
