2027: Like The Tortoise, Governor Seyi Makinde Journeying To Disgrace.
It was the tortoise who embarked on a journey and when his neighbors demanded to know when he would return from his journey, he answered, ” not until I’ve been disgraced”.
Like the tortoise, Governor Seyi Makinde has embarked on an ill-fated journey towards the presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Do not get me wrong. I am not saying that Governor Makinde, as a Nigerian, does not have the right to challenge for the presidency of Nigeria. He does, but, possessing the right to challenge for the presidency is not the same thing as having the wherewithal to mount a serious challenge for Nigeria’s number one job.
After fighting for and losing the control of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to his former friend, former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, Governor Seyi Makinde found solace in the Allied People’s Movement, APM and that is his first challenge.
The APM is not known for being one of Nigeria’s strong political platforms and Governor Seyi Makinde himself lacks the charisma to drive a National movement, the kind of what former Anambra state Governor, Peter Obi did in 2023.
So, with a weak political platform and a weak personality, all that remains for Governor Makinde was to adopt the tactics he adopted in Oyo state in 2019 and 2023, but, unfortunately for him, the terrain is too large for him to sustain his ambition through deceit, betrayal and propaganda.
A few moments before I started writing this piece, I saw a post by Lere Olayinka on Facebook.
It’s a repost of the Advertorial by the Forum of APM State Chairmen from the South -South geo-political zone.
The Advertorial is contained in the Vanguard Newspaper of today, Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
The Forum of APM State Chairmen from the South – South geo-political zone are complaining about Governor Seyi Makinde’s style of politics and they are very direct in the allegations raised against him.
They accused him of coming to their party to make merchandise of them.
I am particularly interested in paragraph 3 of the Advertorial and I will quote part of the paragraph verbatim.
In paragraph 3, they wrote and I quote, “…we have realized that our presidential candidate, Seyi Makinde, lacks substance, the political will and focus to lead us aright as a presidential candidate. He came to the party with a PROMISE OF LIES AND HAS BEEN WALLOWING IN AN OCEAN OF DISHONESTY, POLITICAL COMPROMISE AND INCOMPETENCE. IF HE CAN NOT BE HONEST TO HIS PARTY MEN, HOW CAN HE BE HONEST TO NIGERIANS HE ASPIRES TO LEAD?” ( emphasis mine).
Does the above statement not speak for itself?
What has some of us been saying over the years about Governor Makinde’s penchant for lies and dishonesty?
This will bring me to the statements he made in one of his Town Hall meetings recently.
He was accusing the Federal Government of taxing poverty.
Let us now ask Governor Makinde, who is taxing the poverty stricken commercial motorists, bike riders and Marwa drivers in Oyo state?
Is it Tinubu?
Who is collecting thousands of Naira from them in the guise of waste baskets which are never provided for them? Who is selling a jacket that doesn’t cost more than two thousand Naira for them at the rate of fifteen thousand Naira? Is it Bola Tinubu?
So, in that case, is Governor Seyi Makinde taxing wealth as he is presently preaching across the country?
I also see that he has began to change the narrative concerning his unfounded allegations of the Federal Government owing states the sum of 250bn each over NLNG Dividends.
He is now saying that the allegation cover successive Administrations, but, inclusive of the Tinubu Administration!
I have said it, honestly, the mouth of a liar should bleed when he starts lying. Unfortunately and fortunately for the liar, it doesn’t.
Governor Makinde said the papers are there and that the Federal Government should provide it and I am curious, as a state Governor and vice chairman of the Nigeria Governor’s Forum, doesn’t he have the papers?
Does it then mean that he doesn’t have any concrete evidence and he is just making this bogus allegations up?
I am surprised to hear him asking the Federal Government to provide papers to prove his case for him.
How many of such questions have we asked him as a Governor? Which of them did he provide?
We asked him to provide us with the details of the inflow of monthly allocations for Oyo state and the 33 Local Governments since he became Governor and later, we demanded for the same document from the beginning of the removal of subsidies era, were we obliged?
There was a time that a Legal Practitioner demanded for the identities of the Contractors handling certain projects in Oyo state. His request was declined.
So, where did Governor Makinde get the mouth to demand for papers from the Federal Government?
I am happy that the allegation of merchandising is coming from stakeholders within his party.
I have known from the onset that Governor Seyi Makinde is in the presidential race to negotiate. Unfortunately for him, there is no space for him in the APC.
He has eaten his cake in the APC and after finishing with the cake, he broke the plates with which he was served.
Sola Abegunde.
