Senate Donates ₦50 Million to Families of Oriire Slain Victims, Cautions Makinde Over UN Appeal.
The Senate has approved a donation of N50 million to the families of victims who lost their lives in the tragic kidnapping incident that occurred in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The resolution was reached during plenary on Wednesday following deliberations on the security situation surrounding the abduction of pupils, teachers and other residents in the affected communities.
The donation is aimed at providing relief and support to the bereaved families who suffered losses as a result of the incident, which drew national attention and sparked widespread concern over insecurity in the area.
The Senate’s intervention comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies and government authorities to address the challenges posed by criminal activities in parts of Oyo State and other regions of the country.
Earlier, the upper legislative chamber had considered a motion on the Oriire kidnapping incident and called for intensified security measures to prevent a recurrence of such attacks on schools and communities.
Meanwhile, the Senate on Tuesday urged Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, to reconsider his call for the United Nations to investigate the kidnapping of schoolchildren in Oriire Local Government Area. Lawmakers argued that Nigerian security agencies and relevant authorities should be allowed to conclude ongoing investigations and security operations relating to the incident.
The Oriire kidnapping case attracted widespread condemnation across the country, with political leaders, community groups, student associations and civil society organisations demanding stronger measures to safeguard schools and rural communities from criminal attacks.
Further details on the Senate’s donation and modalities for disbursement to the affected families are expected to emerge in the coming days.
