Adire, Ankara Only Proposals, Not Approved NYSC Uniforms — Minister

The Minister overseeing the ongoing reforms of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has clarified comments made during an appearance on Channels Television regarding proposals for a possible review of the Scheme’s uniform.

In a statement issued following widespread reactions to his remarks, the Minister explained that references to Adire and Ankara fabrics during the discussion were merely examples of suggestions that had emerged during consultations and should not be interpreted as an announcement of an approved replacement for the current NYSC uniform.

According to him, no final decision has been taken on the fabric, design, or any aspect of a proposed new uniform.

He noted that the reform committee is currently considering various options that meet key requirements, including professionalism, national identity, durability, functionality, cost-effectiveness, and the promotion of national pride.

The Minister stressed that any eventual decision would be guided by extensive stakeholder engagement and what best serves the interests of both the NYSC and the nation.

While acknowledging the public interest generated by discussions around the uniform, he urged Nigerians not to lose sight of the broader objectives of the ongoing reforms.

He explained that the reform agenda is aimed at making the NYSC more responsive to contemporary realities by improving the employability of corps members, promoting entrepreneurship, strengthening national integration, enhancing service delivery, and creating a smoother transition from education to productive careers.

According to the Minister, the reforms are designed to empower millions of Nigerian youths and position the NYSC as a stronger platform for national development.

He further assured Nigerians that all proposals under consideration would continue to be carefully evaluated in the best interest of the country.

The clarification comes amid growing public debate over reports suggesting that traditional fabrics such as Adire could replace the current NYSC uniform.
